Think good Hainanese Chicken Rice is cheap? Not all the time. Boon Tong Kee is one brand that aims to change the whole idea of good local food at affordable prices. When I first set foot at Boon Tong Kee's Bukit Timah branch, I was greeted with a fragrant smell of steamed chicken rice. The Chicken was well-seasoned, and goes excellently well with the steamed chicken rice. I really loved the soup too – it wasn't the usual fare of 100% MSG, but rather chicken broth from the preparation of the chicken meat themselves.
However, all these luxuries come at a high relative cost. For an ordinary plate of chicken rice, it set me back for $5. This is really expensive, considering that its just chicken rice plus a few pieces of vegetables.
Go for Boon Tong Kee if you want to experience real, good chicken rice, and don't mind to spend.
Eating chicken rice in a restaurant instead of in a hawker centre needs some getting used to, but Boon Tong Kee consistently serves up good chicken rice. It comes down to personal preference - their chicken is succulent and tender, but on the oily side. The rice is flavourful, a bit salty, but the chilli offsets its saltiness.
I would hesitate to recommend it because it is vastly overpriced for a plate of chicken rice. The contained, air-conditioned restaurant makes for an unpleasant dining experience when the smell of oil lingers in the air. Boon Tong Kee may not be my go-to place for chicken rice, but once in a while, it's a good treat!
It's one of the best chicken rice I've ever tasted in Singapore. You could go for one piece after another and you wouldn't stop until you're bloated.
I've ate there with my family countless times, even dabao-ed home a couple of times, and all I can remember is anticipation with excitement as the food arrived, and a good chat after the sumptuous dinner.
It's a little pricey though, but with the quality of the food, i feel it's rather justifiable.
This is easily one of the more expensive chicken rice places I've been to, but it's still really popular and it's almost synonymous with chicken rice in Singapore (save for Tian Tian) so I guess they must be doing something right.
Their chicken pieces are tender and juicy, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to shell out the money for that again. The cze char dishes are commendable though. I love the Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Eggs. For the salted egg and century egg (remember how much we love our pei dan chok?) lovers do not miss out on this. The combination of everything makes it for a rather sinful treat. I love smothering every grain of rice with the gravy, but that's just me. Another dish I like is the Crispy Beancurd. Okay it's just crispy tofu, but there's something about beautifully done crispy tofu which makes it worth going back for.
Would go back again only if I'm willing to spend $15ish. But otherwise, it does make a very good supper place for those midnight hunger pangs when prata and dimsum just doesn't cut it.
Boon Tong Kee might not have the best Chicken Rice in Singapore but it makes up for this by being one of the most consistent and by offering a good variety of Zhi Char dishes so that there is something for everyone.
Don't you hate it when you recommend a place to a friend and when they try it it just wasn't as good as before? I've been going to Boon Tong Kee for over 5 years and I have never had that problem. I can expect the same level of quality each time and I always leave happy. My personal favourites to order are of course their steamed chicken rice where they give thick cuts of juicy chicken instead of the thin breast meat we're used to from coffee shops. I also really enjoy their tofu with prawns, spinach with 3 kinds of egg and crispy tofu. Having zhi char dishes with chicken rice just makes it all the more tasty.
Overall, I think Boon Tong Kee is a very safe bet especially if you're introducing foreigners to chicken rice for the first time. The restaurant itself is also comfortably air-conditioned and the service is attentive and agreeable. However, I only frequent the east coast outlet near joo chiat and can't speak for the quality of the other outlets.
I will usually go Boon Tong Kee for my family gathering because it suits the taste of the elders and the young. The price is reasonable and there is air-con. In my opinion, it's better to go there in big groups because we will then be able to order many different dishes and try out all the nice food.
I especially like the chicken. It's so tender and smooth. I can safely say it's one of the best chicken that I have ever eaten. Another dish that I like is the fish maw soup. They are not stingy with the ingredients and the soup is really tasty.
Service is quite okay, except for the long queues during dinner time and some branches do not allow reservation.
Eating chicken rice has always been an integral part of life as a Singaporean. Since young, I have always loved chicken rice, from those that go from 2 bucks at the market or coffeeshop to the higher end kind you find in hotels or high end restaurants. Yet, Boon Tong Kee's chicken rice never fails to keep my taste buds satisfied.
Personally, I have been to the balestier Road outlet for a family dinner as well as to the East Coast one. I definitely preferred the balestier outlet as the service and ambience was more to my liking. The staff, although many were aged, were helpful at recommending nice side dishes to go along with the famous chicken which we were going to order. Not to mention, the food was served within 10 to 15 mins after we placed our orders. The only issue with this outlet was the limited parking and the carpark was located pretty far from the restaurant, those causing much inconvenience to my family members who were mostly aged.
As for the East Coast outlet, I generally enjoyed my time there, the chicken they served left a strong chewy succulent after taste and it has a unique fragrance like no other. I know many of you guys think that such a place which sells up-scale chicken rice would probably cost quite a bit, let me correct that notion for you guys.
There was once, my dad actually did a take-away, and I have personally seen this myself at the East Coast Road outlet, cars would actually stop right outside Bong Tong Kee's restaurant and the staff would come out of the shop to deliver the takeaway orders nicely to the customers in the car. I thought that such service was indeed interesting. Not to mention, when my dad brought back the chicken rice, it was presented in a really nice transparent box which kept the rice fresh and it tasted just as good as me eating in. The chili sauce and black soya sauce was also well kept in small containers.
All in all, i really like the concept of affordable good chicken rice and Boon Tong Kee has certainly lived up to it's name all these years. So, have you had your chicken rice?

For Boon Tong Kee, they only sells steamed chicken where the meat is so succulent, dipping into their homemade chilli sauce, it's a perfect taste for it! Of course, to accompany their succulent chicken, rice is also another important factor! Their fragrance rice has that fragrant pandan smell that's unforgettable. Try it to know why many people are so in love with Singapore's chicken rice!
Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice(BTK)-a must try for all chicken rice lovers. Though detractors claim that the food quality at BTK has deteriorated over time due to the rapid expansion of food chains over the years, I personally beg to differ. It might be the case of differing standards in different outlets though. As for me, I frequent the Bendemeer outlet and it has never failed to keep me satisfied.
One thing that sets BTK apart from other stalls is the fact that you can get only steamed chicken here. Though that might prove to be a turn-off for die-hard roasted chicken fans, BTK's overall restaurant ambience, tender juicy chicken and fragrant rice has even converted me-one of those die-hard roasted chicken fans- into a steamed chicken fan; and constantly lures me to go back for more.
Their exceptionally good customer service and transparency on cooking methods is a great plus point too! For people who might be concerned about blowing a hole in their wallets by just one meal, opt for BTK's amazingly cheap $3.50 takeaway set instead of dining in. Trust me, you will be getting the same exceptionally good chicken rice in a microwave-safe box, complete with professionally packaged utensils(even toothpicks!), chilli sauce and complimentary wet wipes at such a cheap price. So, the next time you're craving for some chicken rice be sure to keep Boon Tong Kee in mind!
For those who stay around Katong, Boon Tong Kee is a reknown food chain in that area. However, it is regretful and saddening to see many good food outlet go down the path of maximising growth and reducing food quality.
Food is no longer like before. The chicken is no longer moist or full of flavour and taste just like any chicken rice you pick at the food centre with your eyes closed. The usual patrons have also noticed that the fact that they do not de-bone their chicken is a reflection of a chicken rice stall on being lazy.
The staff are no longer recognizable anymore. I used to patronize this place before I head for gaming sessions but the place have simply lost its magic touch to entice my stomach anymore.
